Lake Eyasi

A visit to Lake Eyasi allows you to learn and experience the iconic hunter-gatherer lifestyle including hunting techniques, food preparation, survival skills and cultural norms still practiced by bushmen that inhabit the land.

Lake Eyasi is located in the southwestern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area between the Great Rift Valley escarpment and the Kidero Mountains. Lake Eyasi is near land is home to the unchanged ancient cultures of the Hadzabe Bushmen, remaining hunters and gatherers in  East Africa.

A visit to Hadzabe tribe near lake Eyasi should be considered to those wishing to experience a unique and dwindling culture found only in Tanzania.

The Hadzabe do not raise animals, but instead are hunters and gatherers that rely on the local land for their survival. You can learn their nomadic lifestyle, watch them hunting, learn how to use a bow and arrow, attempt to make fire, partake in digging roots and tubers and ceremonial dances.

The chiefs govern the group and distribute responsibilities to each member of the tribe. Men are the leading hunters and specifically pursue baboons, elands, kudus, warthogs, and sometimes birds if larger animals are not available. Interestingly enough, baboons meat and honey are used in the marital rituals for bride prices.

The Datoga are incredible blacksmiths crafting both jewellery and arrowheads. The Lake itself is a shallow alkaline lake that attracts many animals such as the good-looking flamingos.
